Description
The 1867 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-570 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. Its obverse is a Liberty head like the nickel three-cent piece with a star on the coronet; the reverse is a laurel wreath with IN GOD WE TRUST above and CENTS curved under the 5. Two obverse dies were used, with the date near or away from the curl. Judd lists it in nickel with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-5. Judd classes it as an essai, a trial of a proposed design. USPatterns.com estimates three to four dozen from the die with the date away from the curl and five from the other. It is catalogued as Judd-570, Pollock-638 and 640, Adams-Woodin 644 and 646, Taxay EP498. Cataloged as PCGS #60780.
