Description
The 1867 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-571 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. Its obverse is a Liberty head like the nickel three-cent piece with a star on the coronet; the reverse is a laurel wreath with IN GOD WE TRUST above and CENTS curved under the 5. Two obverse dies were used, with the date near or away from the curl. Judd lists it in copper with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-6. Judd classes it as an essai, a trial of a proposed design. USPatterns.com counts at least nine. It is catalogued as Judd-571, Pollock-639 and 641, Adams-Woodin 645 and 647, Taxay EP499. Cataloged as PCGS #60781.
