Description
A proof impression of the J-571 Shield nickel pattern variety. This piece is part of the extended 1867 experimental program that tested numerous die combinations for the five-cent denomination. The shield design on the obverse had been selected in part because its bold, architectural lines struck well in the hard copper-nickel alloy, unlike the more delicate Liberty Head designs used on other denominations. The reverse experimentation focused on finding a design that would be equally robust, eventually leading to the simplified arrangement of stars without intervening rays.
