Description
A proof striking of the J-573 Shield nickel pattern, falling near the upper end of the 1867 experimental range. This variety is part of the final group of patterns produced before the Mint settled on the No Rays reverse design for regular production. The Shield nickel's transition year generated more pattern varieties than any other denomination in the American series for a single year, reflecting both the practical urgency of the die breakage problem and the broader spirit of monetary experimentation that characterized the Reconstruction period.
