Description
A compositional variant of J-584, designated with the "a" suffix to indicate it was struck on an alternative planchet. This piece represents one of the final metallurgical experiments in the 1867 Shield nickel pattern series, testing how a near-final design configuration would perform in a different alloy or on a planchet of different thickness. Suffix varieties from the end of an experimental series are particularly interesting because they represent the Mint's final questions about a design that was otherwise ready for production adoption.
Rarity Notes
R.7 to R.8. Very rare, approximately 4-7 examples survive.
