Description

A proof impression of the J-583 Shield nickel pattern, this piece is among the penultimate entries in the 1867 experimental series. The design testing documented by these late-series patterns informed the final specifications adopted for the No Rays Shield nickel that would begin regular production later in 1867 and continue through 1883. The proof striking reveals fine details of the die work that might be less visible on business strike examples, allowing numismatists to study the precise configuration of design elements under optimal viewing conditions.

Rarity Notes

R.7 to R.8. Very rare, estimated 4-7 examples extant.
