Description
The 1867 Nickel Pattern - J-573 is a five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It was struck from the regular 1867 Shield nickel dies without rays, so its design matches the regular coin; only the metal differs. Judd lists it in copper with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-6. Judd classes it as a die trial, a strike from regular dies in a metal other than the coin's own. Two reverse dies were used, the reverse of 1866 and the reverse of 1867, with over a dozen known of each (USPatterns.com). It is catalogued as Judd-573, Pollock-649 and 650, Adams-Woodin 623.
