Description

The first of a substantial series of 1867 nickel five-cent patterns, this proof specimen continues the intensive alloy and design testing program begun in 1866. With the Shield nickel now in regular production following its authorization the previous year, the 1867 patterns shifted focus from fundamental design selection toward refinements of the adopted Shield type. J-561 represents one of the earliest die varieties in the 1867 nickel sequence, which would ultimately comprise over two dozen varieties. The Shield obverse with IN GOD WE TRUST and the numeral 5 reverse with stars and rays reflect the design that William Barber and Longacre had finalized for circulation strikes.
