Description
The 1867 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-561 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It carries James B. Longacre's Indian head design with a feathered headdress. Judd lists it in aluminum with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-5. Judd classes it as an essai, a trial of a proposed design. A Mint note found in the National Archives records 100 aluminum pieces delivered on July 18, 1867 (USPatterns.com). It is catalogued as Judd-561, Pollock-622, Adams-Woodin 630, Taxay EP487.
