Description

A proof impression of the J-575 Shield nickel pattern, continuing the sequence of 1867 experimental varieties. The later entries in the 1867 nickel pattern series may represent variations that were tested after the No Rays modification had been tentatively approved, exploring additional refinements such as star placement, numeral sizing, or border configuration. Each variety, no matter how subtle its distinction, was carefully preserved in proof format as a record of the Mint's design development process.
