Description

This proof nickel pattern represents one of the later varieties in the 1867 experimental series. J-572 continues the exploration of alternative designs for the Shield nickel, with the Mint approaching the point where the No Rays reverse modification would be formally adopted for regular production. Patterns in this range may show progressive refinements toward the final design solution, with each variety representing a step closer to the configuration that would serve the denomination for the remainder of its production run through 1883.
