1867 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-584
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This proof nickel pattern is one of the final three entries in the 1867 Shield nickel experimental series. J-584 represents the culmination of nearly two years of intensive design testing for the five-cent denomination, beginning with the initial alloy and design experiments of 1866 and concluding with the refined varieties that informed the No Rays production type. The Shield nickel would go on to become one of the most collected nineteenth-century American coin series, with the 1867 With Rays to No Rays transition representing one of its defining numismatic moments.
