Description
This proof nickel pattern features a design variation that places it in the middle of the 1867 Shield nickel experimental sequence. By the time these patterns were being struck, the Mint had accumulated nearly a year of production data on the original Shield nickel design, providing empirical evidence for the design changes under consideration. The heavy die wear experienced during production of the With Rays variety made the case for simplification compelling, and patterns in this range tested the aesthetic impact of removing or modifying the ray elements while preserving the overall composition of the reverse.
