1867 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-565
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A proof nickel pattern from the mid-range of the 1867 experimental series. This variety was produced as part of the comprehensive testing program that accompanied the Shield nickel's transition from its original With Rays reverse to the simpler No Rays design. The reverse modification eliminated the delicate rays between the stars surrounding the large numeral 5, dramatically improving die life without substantially altering the coin's appearance. J-565 may represent one of the intermediate designs tested during this evaluation period, struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition.
