Description
A proof nickel pattern displaying yet another die combination in the extensive 1867 series. The variety of experimental strikes produced this year reflects the Mint's recognition that the Shield nickel's reverse design needed improvement. Regular production strikes suffered from premature die failures caused by the intricate star-and-ray pattern attempting to fill the hard copper-nickel alloy, and the Mint was actively testing simplified alternatives. J-563 may represent a transitional design concept between the original With Rays reverse and the eventual No Rays modification adopted later in 1867.
