Bearing the reverse legend "PLUKIBUS" instead of the correct "PLURIBUS" in E PLURIBUS UNUM, this 1786 New Jersey copper preserves a die-engraving error where the letter K was substituted for the letter R — likely the result of a confused or reversed letter punch applied during the hand-engraving process. Cataloged as Maris 18-M and Whitman 4765, this scarce legend error variety belongs to the Post-1776 States Coinage (1776-1788) series. Legend errors on New Jersey coppers are less common than on Connecticut coppers, where misspelled legends appear with some frequency, making the PLUKIBUS error an interesting rarity within the New Jersey series.
