Description
This 1787 New Jersey copper has an 8 under the first 7 of the date, read as 1787 over 1887. An act of June 1, 1786 let Walter Mould, Albion Cox and Thomas Goadsby strike 10,000 pounds in coppers for New Jersey, at fifteen to the shilling and six pennyweight six grains each, with marks chosen by the justices of the state Supreme Court. The coins show a horse's head above a plow with NOVA CAESAREA and the date, and a shield with E PLURIBUS UNUM. Edward Maris numbered the dies in 1881, obverses by number and reverses by letter. Maris noticed the 8 under the first 7 on his obverse 35, a mistake corrected in the die. PCGS number 45427.
