Description
The 1964 (D) Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint as a quarter in the Washington Silver Quarters 1932-1964 series. The Denver Mint struck 704,135,528 quarters dated 1964. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with olive branches below. Final year of 90% silver composition. Massive mintages as the public hoarded silver coins before the transition to clad. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $19 to $30 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5877.
Rarity Notes
High mintage of 704,135,528 pieces. Readily available in circulated and lower uncirculated grades. Well-struck gems with full luster remain desirable despite the large production run.
