1964-D Transitional Reverse Design WTRD-002

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-25-1964D-901 and attributed by the Wexler Team as 1964-D 25-cent WTRD-002, this transitional reverse design variety pairs a 1964-D obverse with a 1965 reverse design — an anachronism that should not exist under normal production procedures. The 1965 reverse introduced subtle modifications, and its appearance on a 1964-D quarter places this among the most significant Washington Quarter varieties. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running SSW from the bottom left of the E in WE, a diagonal die gouge near the left bottom of the ribbon, and a light die crack across the base of the bust through the upper designer's initials. Reverse markers show a die scratch running SW to NE connecting two leaves above the R in DOLLAR, a die scratch running NNE from the branch below the arrows, and two parallel die scratches north from the tip of the top arrowhead and the leaf adjacent to the arrowheads. Transitional design errors occur when dies from consecutive design years are inadvertently mixed during production, creating coins that combine elements from two distinct design periods.
