1964-D Transitional Reverse Design WTRD-001

Description

A 1965 reverse design paired with a 1964-D obverse die — the defining characteristic of a transitional design error — makes WTRD-001 one of the most historically significant Washington Quarter varieties of the 20th century. A transitional error occurs when a die from a subsequent year's design is inadvertently paired with a die from the current year; here, a reverse die intended for 1965 production entered service on a 1964-D quarter, producing a coin with design elements that should not co-exist. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die gouge right of the 1 in the date, die scratches SSE to NNW above IN GOD, two parallel die scratches SW from the left of L in LIBERTY, and a die scratch SW from the top left of I in LIBERTY. Reverse die markers include two parallel die scratches SW to NE above R in DOLLAR and a die scratch from the top right to the bottom right of E in QUARTER.
