1964-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Showing light spread on OF AMERICA, DOLLAR, and ER of QUARTER, this 1964-D Washington Quarter DDR-006 carries die markers UVC-1115 and DMR-011. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B with both reverse and obverse at mid-die state; and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed mid-die state at Stage B represents the most commonly available condition. The 1964-D issue holds particular numismatic significance as the last Washington Quarter struck on the 90% silver composition — the Coinage Act of 1965 would transition quarters to copper-nickel clad starting the following year. This made 1964-D quarters targets for mass hoarding, and enormous quantities were struck at the Denver Mint to meet demand. The light spread concentrated on the lower and right portions of the reverse inscriptions suggests a directional hub displacement that most strongly affected elements in that quadrant. Collectors examining 1964-D silver quarters should check OF AMERICA and DOLLAR under magnification as the primary diagnostic areas for this variety.
