Error
Description
Struck in the final year of silver Washington Quarter production, this Denver Mint doubled die obverse exhibits close counterclockwise spread pivoting from approximately the one o'clock position. The rotation affects IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, and the lower queue of Liberty's hair. A die scratch runs southwest from the upper left of the L in LIBERTY, and a heavy die crack crosses the base of the bust, curving south to the top of the numeral one before continuing into the lower queue on the right side. A separate die crack extends southeast from the lower queue to the rim at roughly the four-thirty position. The reverse carries its own set of markers: a die gouge forming a dot under the point of the eagle's beak, a die crack descending the eagle's right wing to the upper Q in QUARTER, and another crack from US in PLURIBUS down the left wing to the lower I in AMERICA. The 1964-D quarter holds enormous significance as the last 90% silver quarter struck for circulation, and die varieties from this terminal date are eagerly pursued. Attributed by the Wexler Team.
