Description

Northwest repunching gives this 1964-D Washington Quarter RPM-005 a diagonal displacement direction that differs from the cardinal north and south directions seen on the other cataloged RPMs for this final-year silver date. The D/D Northwest pattern means the final mintmark punch was applied to the upper left of the initial impression, leaving traces of the first D displaced to the southeast — a compound directional shift that creates a distinctive diagonal overlap. Northwest repunching produces different visual signatures than pure north or south displacement because the secondary D image is offset on two axes simultaneously, creating asymmetric overlap where the initial punch's traces appear most prominently at the lower right of the final D. The 1964-D's five documented RPMs (001, 002, 004, 005) spanning four different directions — north (twice), south, and northwest — demonstrate the full range of positional variability in hand-punched mintmarks from this prolific Denver production year.
