The D/D Northwest pattern means the final mintmark punch was applied to the upper left of the initial impression, leaving traces of the first D displaced to the southeast — a compound directional shift that creates a distinctive diagonal overlap. Northwest repunching produces different visual signatures than pure north or south displacement because the secondary D image is offset on two axes simultaneously, creating asymmetric overlap where the initial punch's traces appear most prominently at the lower right of the final D.
