Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team and extensively cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-V and Cherrypickers' Guide FS-25-1964D-801 (025), WDDR-001 on the 1964-D Washington Silver Quarter presents a strong clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately the 9 o'clock position, visible on STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM (EPU), QUARTER DOLLAR, and the lower wreath. Obverse die markers show no significant features, while reverse markers include a die scratch running NNW from the upper left end of the arrow feathers and a light die crack running down the eagle's right wing. The Class V pivoted hub doubling mechanism, with rotation centered at about 9 o'clock, produces progressively stronger displacement as distance from the pivot increases — meaning the inscriptions and wreath elements furthest from the 9 o'clock position (those on the right side of the reverse) show the most dramatic doubling. The FS-25-1964D-801 Cherrypickers' listing confirms this as a widely recognized and sought-after variety. The 1964-D Washington Quarter was the final Denver Mint issue in 90% silver composition (6.25 grams, 24.3 mm diameter) before the 1965 transition to copper-nickel clad. John Flanagan's Washington obverse paired with the heraldic eagle reverse defines the classic Washington Quarter design. As WDDR-001, this variety holds the primary reverse doubled die position for the 1964-D, and its multiple cross-references across CONECA, Cherrypickers', and Wexler systems underscore its significance as one of the key Washington Quarter doubled die varieties.
