1964-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1964-D 25¢ WDDO-014, this doubled die obverse variety appears on the 1964-D Washington silver quarter struck at the Denver Mint. A significant counterclockwise spread is visible on the upper 6 in the date, providing the primary pickup point for attribution. The 1964-D quarter holds the distinction of being among the last 90% silver quarters produced for general circulation, as the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned quarters to a copper-nickel clad composition. These coins weigh 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm and a reeded edge. Obverse die markers include a short, strong die gouge running west from the upper L and the upper I in LIBERTY, essential for confirming the correct die pair. The reverse carries multiple diagnostic markers: a small die gouge (dot) inside the lower C in AMERICA, die scratches running in a SW/NE direction below the back ends of the arrows, and a die gouge running through the lower part of the leaf to the right of the back of the arrows. John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington, adapted from a Jean-Antoine Houdon bust, serves as the obverse design for this variety. The Denver Mint struck an extraordinary 704,135,528 quarters in 1964 as the government ramped up production in anticipation of the silver-to-clad transition, creating one of the highest single-year mintages in Washington quarter history.
