Description

This 1964 Special Mint Set Washington quarter is one of the rarest and most enigmatic issues in the Washington quarter series. SMS coins from 1964 are not officially acknowledged by the US Mint and have been produced in very limited quantities, as experimental strikes or presentation pieces. These coins exhibit characteristics intermediate between regular business strikes and proofs, with somewhat reflective surfaces and sharper-than-normal strikes, but lacking the full mirror finish of true proof coins. The obverse features Flanagan's Washington portrait with noticeably crisper detail than standard circulation strikes, while the reverse eagle shows enhanced definition. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3mm diameter and reeded edge. The 1964 SMS quarter is highly prized by Washington quarter specialists and variety collectors.

Rarity Notes
