1964-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

An extremely close spread toward the center shows on LIBERTY, the date, and the lower queue of this 1964 Denver Washington silver quarter, cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1964-D 25 cent WDDO-006. The obverse die carries extensive markers: a die scratch running north from the upper right of the E in WE to the underside of the chin, die scratches running south from the lower R and U of TRUST, two small die gouges above the upper left of the U in TRUST, a die scratch running southwest from the lower left of the I in LIBERTY, and a light die crack across the base of the bust. Reverse diagnostics include a die crack running through the lower right wing to the upper left of the Q in QUARTER and two die scratches running southwest to northeast at the left of the eagle's neck. The 1964-D quarter was the final year of 90% silver composition for the denomination before the Coinage Act of 1965 introduced clad planchets. The extremely close spread requires careful examination under magnification, with the die scratch from E in WE to the chin providing the quickest confirming diagnostic for the die pair.
