1964 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

1964-D WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1964-D Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A spread toward the center appears on the lower queue, the date and BERTY. Obverse Stage A: a scratch heads north off the W in WE from its upper left; a long SSW/NNE scratch runs left of the nose and ends under the L in LIBERTY; and a scratch leaves the bottom of the bust heading SSW, between the date's 1 and 9. Obverse Stage B adds a crack starting at the front of the eyebrow and heading NE into the forehead, an E/W crack through the upper hair, and a crack across the bust's base that enters the lower queue and reaches into the field left of the base. Reverse Stage A has a crack linking the second S in STATES, low down, with the top of the I in PLURIBUS, plus cracks down both the right and left wings. Reverse Stage B shows a long scratch running north from the arrow tips up to the wing's underside, a short, strong scratch heading WNW off the C in AMERICA from its lower left, two parallel scratches in the space separating AMERICA's first A from the lower F in OF, and a scratch heading WNW off the D in DOLLAR from its upper left.
