The 1871 Dollar Patterns page groups the dollar patterns dated 1871 in the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series, all struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, appears without stars around the border (J-1120 to J-1131) and with stars, using a flag of 13 stars (J-1133 to J-1138f) or of 22 stars (J-1139 to J-1150), each with the Standard Silver reverse of 1870 or the regular reverse, in silver, copper and aluminum with reeded and plain edges. J-1132 and J-1132a pair the starless obverse with a No Motto reverse of the type used until 1865, a fantasy made for collectors. J-1154 to J-1157 carry a COMMERCIAL DOLLAR reverse for a heavier 420-grain coin, which USPatterns.com calls the first trade dollar pattern. J-1151 to J-1153 come from the regular silver dollar dies and J-1161 to J-1163 from the regular gold dollar dies, in copper, aluminum and nickel.
