Description

The 1871 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1143 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, who succeeded Longacre after his death in 1869: Liberty, in an Indian headdress, sits facing left with her left hand on a globe bearing a LIBERTY scroll and her right holding a pole topped by a liberty cap, with flags behind her. This die has stars around the border and 22 stars in the flag, often called the obverse of 1870 although it lacks Longacre's name, and the reverse is the Standard Silver reverse of 1870, with STANDARD above the denomination in a wreath of corn, cotton and wheat. USPatterns.com reports that the Mint sold the Longacre designs in sets running from the half dime up to the silver dollar. The aluminum piece with a reeded edge is possibly unique.
