Description
The 1871 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1155 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, with 22 stars in the flag, and its reverse reads COMMERCIAL DOLLAR with 420 GRS. and 900 FINE inside a large wreath. USPatterns.com calls the design the first trade dollar pattern: a 420-grain dollar, heavier than the standard silver dollar, meant to compete with the Mexican peso in trade with Asia. Two are confirmed in silver with a plain edge. It is struck in silver with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1299, Adams-Woodin 1116 and Taxay EP849. Cataloged as PCGS #61417.
