Description

The 1871 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1131 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, who succeeded Longacre after his death in 1869: Liberty, in an Indian headdress, sits facing left with her left hand on a globe bearing a LIBERTY scroll and her right holding a pole topped by a liberty cap, with flags behind her. This die has no stars around the border, and the reverse is the regular dollar reverse; USPatterns.com identifies the reverse die as the one used for the 1866 copper dollars and at least some 1865 dollars with IN GOD WE TRUST. USPatterns.com reports that the Mint sold the Longacre designs in sets running from the half dime up to the silver dollar. Two or three are known in aluminum with a plain edge.
