Description

Opening the massive fifty-one-variety dollar pattern series for 1871, J-1120 features a Seated Liberty obverse with IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll and a heraldic eagle reverse displaying ONE DOLLAR below, struck in the standard silver alloy. The dollar denomination was the primary battleground for the Trade Dollar design competition, as Congress had authorized the creation of a heavier silver dollar specifically for Asian commerce. Every 1871 dollar pattern was a direct contestant in this design competition, the outcome of which would reshape America's relationship with international trade.
