The 1871 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1138b is a Judd listing for a proof dollar pattern of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series that USPatterns.com has not confirmed. Its obverse is James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, who succeeded Longacre after his death in 1869: Liberty, in an Indian headdress, sits facing left with her left hand on a globe bearing a LIBERTY scroll and her right holding a pole topped by a liberty cap, with flags behind her. This die has stars around the border and 13 stars in the flag, often called the obverse of 1871, and the reverse is the regular dollar reverse; USPatterns.com says the reverse die may be the one used for the 1866 copper dollars, but the coins have not been available for study. USPatterns.com doubts that a silver piece with a plain edge exists; the Woodin 1914 ANS exhibition listing may be J-1146. Earlier editions of Judd used J-1138b for the aluminum piece now numbered J-1138e. Judd lists it in silver with a plain edge. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1277 and Taxay EP837. Cataloged as PCGS #61400.
