Description
The 1871 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1138e is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, who succeeded Longacre after his death in 1869: Liberty, in an Indian headdress, sits facing left with her left hand on a globe bearing a LIBERTY scroll and her right holding a pole topped by a liberty cap, with flags behind her. This die has stars around the border and 13 stars in the flag, often called the obverse of 1871, and the reverse is the regular dollar reverse; USPatterns.com says the reverse die may be the one used for the 1866 copper dollars, but the coins have not been available for study. USPatterns.com reports that the Mint sold the Longacre designs in sets running from the half dime up to the silver dollar. Two are known in aluminum with a reeded edge; earlier editions of Judd numbered this piece J-1138b. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1280 and Taxay EP840. Cataloged as PCGS #61905.
