Description

The 1871 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1132 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, who succeeded Longacre after his death in 1869: Liberty, in an Indian headdress, sits facing left with her left hand on a globe bearing a LIBERTY scroll and her right holding a pole topped by a liberty cap, with flags behind her. Here the obverse without stars is paired with a No Motto reverse of the type used from 1840 to 1865, a die the Mint was not supposed to have kept. USPatterns.com calls the muling a fantasy made for sale to collectors, notes that it is not known whether it was struck in 1871 or later, and says the reverse die is not the one used on the 1875 and 1876 trade dollar patterns. Three are known in copper with a reeded edge; one is ex Doughty (1891) and Woodside (1892). It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8.
