Description
The 1879 Morgan Dollar is a dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 series. The U.S. Mint produced 14.8 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 6 variants, accounting for 40% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. The 1879-CC is scarce and sought after as an early Carson City issue. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $87 to $741 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
