Description
Produced at the San Francisco Mint, the 1879 (S) Morgan Dollar - Reverse of 1878 is part of the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 series. With a mintage of 9.1 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 4th of 6 mint variants by mintage, with 24% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. The 1879-CC is scarce and sought after as an early Carson City issue. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $92 to $338 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
