Error
Description
Discovered in April 2024 by Mark Witkower, this 1879-P Morgan Dollar variety is classified as III2 1 C3a (Lines in RT, Multiple Lines in Eagle - Clashed) with die pair number 179. The obverse (III2 1) shares the same die as VAM-1F but in a later stage showing obverse clash marks. The reverse (C3a) displays numerous fine die scratches from over-polishing that are visible throughout the eagle, a characteristic of extensive die maintenance. The shared obverse die relationship with VAM-1F establishes that the same physical die was used across multiple reverse pairings, with the clash marks on the VAM-1G2 obverse indicating additional die-on-die contact occurred after the VAM-1F die state was documented. As a 2024 discovery, VAM-1G2 represents one of the more recent additions to the 1879-P Morgan Dollar catalog, demonstrating that new varieties continue to be identified even in extensively studied dates. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1879 Morgan Dollar is George T. Morgan's iconic Liberty Head design in its second year of production.
