About This Coin
The 1868 Nickel Patterns page groups the five-cent patterns dated 1868 in the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series, all struck at the Philadelphia Mint. They include an enlarged Liberty head with 5 CENTS in a laurel wreath on regular and broad planchets (J-623 to J-629); reverses with a V above an ornate shield (J-630), a V in a laurel wreath with a Maltese cross (J-631, and J-633 and J-634 with a star on the coronet) and a large six-pointed star (J-632); and strikings from the regular Shield nickel dies (J-635 and J-636). J-A1868-2 is an incomplete reverse die trial.
