Description
This proof nickel pattern from 1868 features another variation in the Shield five-cent experimental series. J-629 falls in the latter half of the year's fourteen-variety program, where patterns increasingly reflected near-final configurations that the Mint was considering for production adoption. The Shield nickel's design language, with its bold geometric lines and prominent motto, had proven well suited to the hard copper-nickel alloy, and patterns in this range focused on fine-tuning rather than fundamental redesign.
