Description
This proof nickel pattern continues the latter portion of the 1868 experimental program. The Shield nickel was approaching the end of its initial development phase, and the pattern varieties from 1868 document the final refinements to a design that would remain essentially unchanged through 1883. J-631 features the characteristic shield motif on the obverse with IN GOD WE TRUST prominently displayed, while the reverse presents the numeral 5 within a circle of stars in the adopted No Rays configuration.
