Description
A proof impression of J-634, this Shield nickel pattern represents one of the final experimental varieties for the denomination in 1868. The pattern program for the Shield nickel would continue in 1869 under new Chief Engraver William Barber, who brought different artistic sensibilities to the role. These late 1868 patterns therefore represent some of the last experimental nickel designs prepared under Longacre's oversight, marking a transition point in the denomination's design development.
