Description
The 1868 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-633 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It repeats the design of J-631 with a star added to Liberty's coronet: the reverse has a V inside a laurel wreath closed by a scroll reading IN GOD WE TRUST and a small Maltese cross. Two obverse dies are known, a low date (Pollock-704) and a high date (Pollock-705), and the pieces were issued in sets with the cent and three-cent patterns. It is struck in nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates the low-date die R-6 and the high-date die R-5. It is also catalogued as Pollock-704 and Pollock-705, Adams-Woodin 675 and Taxay EP532. Cataloged as PCGS #60851.
