Description
This proof nickel pattern from 1868 is among the penultimate entries in the year's experimental Shield nickel series. J-633 was produced during a period of transition at the Philadelphia Mint, with Chief Engraver Longacre's failing health necessitating greater reliance on assistant engraver William Barber for die preparation. This leadership transition may be reflected in subtle stylistic differences between earlier and later entries in the 1868 pattern series, as Barber's influence gradually increased.
