Description
A second proof nickel pattern for 1868, featuring die characteristics distinct from J-623. With the Shield nickel now well established in circulation and the reverse design stabilized in the No Rays configuration, the 1868 pattern program could focus on secondary design improvements such as border treatments, relief adjustments, and surface finish modifications. The copper-nickel alloy continued to present unique challenges for die preparation, and ongoing experimentation helped the Mint optimize its production techniques for this relatively new composition.
