Description
The final nickel pattern variety cataloged for 1868, J-636 concludes the third year of Shield five-cent experimental production. This closing entry in the 1868 program represents the end of Longacre-era nickel pattern experimentation, as the following year would see William Barber assume the Chief Engraver position and bring his own perspective to the denomination's continued development. The Shield nickel's design, refined through three years of intensive pattern production spanning over fifty proof varieties, had been thoroughly optimized for mass production in the challenging copper-nickel alloy.
