Description
A proof striking of the J-632 Shield nickel pattern, among the later entries in the 1868 experimental series. By this point in the year's pattern production, the Mint had generated a substantial body of experimental data from nickel patterns spanning three consecutive years. The cumulative knowledge from over sixty nickel pattern varieties across 1866-1868 provided an unprecedented level of design documentation for any American coin denomination.
