Coin Series
About This Series
Private gold coins struck by Christopher Bechtler and his son August in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, using gold from local mines. The Bechtlers produced $1, $2.50, and $5 gold coins before the establishment of the Charlotte and Dahlonega branch mints. These were among the first gold dollars struck in America and circulated widely in the Southern gold mining regions.
