Oregon Gold (1849)

Coin Series
Oregon Gold (1849)

About This Series

Extremely rare private gold coins struck by the Oregon Exchange Company in Oregon City during 1849. Only $5 and $10 denominations were produced in small quantities to address the currency shortage in the Oregon Territory before it could access California gold. The beaver design on the reverse gave these the nickname "Beaver Money." Surviving specimens are highly prized.
