August Bechtler Five Dollar Gold Pieces
Base
About This Coin
A. Bechtler five-dollar pieces of 134 grains at 21 carats (Kagin K-27), 128 grains at 22 carats (K-28) and 141 grains at 20 carats (K-29). The mint later passed to A. Bechtler, whose name replaced C. Bechtler's on the dies (Eckfeldt and Du Bois, 1850). Christopher Bechtler died in 1843, and Wikipedia names Augustus among the sons who came with him in 1829. August kept the three grades of 20, 21 and 22 carats for his five-dollar pieces but dropped the GEORGIA GOLD legend (Greysheet). The Mint found his five-dollar pieces between full value and one and a half percent short and his dollars about two percent below their value (Eckfeldt and Du Bois).
