Description
The 1837 Christopher Bechtler Two and a Half Dollar Gold Piece with 75 grains and beaded border continues the 75-grain quarter eagle standard into the later period of Christopher Bechtler's mint operation. The beaded border — a ring of small raised dots around the coin's perimeter — distinguishes this from the earlier no-beads variety and adds a decorative element consistent with Bechtler's evolving die designs. By 1837, the Bechtler mint was well established as a trusted source of gold coinage in the Carolina Piedmont. The mint's reputation for accurate gold content had been proven through years of successful circulation, and Bechtler coins were accepted not only in the local mining communities but throughout the southeastern states. The continuation of the 75-grain standard alongside newer reduced-weight varieties indicates that Bechtler maintained multiple denominations to serve different market needs. The "250" value mark on the coin refers to the denomination of two dollars and fifty cents, while "20.C" indicates the fineness of 20 carats. Combined with the "75.G" weight mark, these inscriptions provided users with complete information about the coin's metallic content — a transparency that was a hallmark of the Bechtler mint and contributed to the wide acceptance of its products.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Estimated 25-40 surviving examples. A transitional variety maintaining the heavier 75-grain standard.
