Description
This proof gold piece (Kagin K-30) is a later striking from the A. Bechtler 141-grain, 20-carat obverse and the A. Bechtler reverse. Henry Chapman, a Philadelphia coin dealer, obtained three Bechtler half eagle dies, an A. BECHTLER obverse reading 141.G. 20. CARATS. and two reverses, one of A. Bechtler and one of C. Bechtler at RUTHERF:, and had proof pieces struck from them in gold at the Philadelphia Mint. Greysheet dates the striking to March 1922 and believes about fifteen were made from each pair of dies; PCGS catalogs the pieces as struck about 1908. Greysheet describes it as a restrike of K-29 from polished dies. Catalogue numbers: K-30. PCGS number 10054.
